Derrick was born on January 10, 1975. He was a
very healthy and happy baby boy. At the age of two Derrick became sick with a
very high fever, which led him to have seizures. Eventually those seizures took
their toll and began affecting his cognitive functions and thereby altering the
course of his life. I often wonder where he would have been if his brain
hadnt been affected by those seizures, because anyone who really got to
know Derrick could see that there was an intelligence and determination to
succeed that contradicted the rest of his condition.
As a child on into adulthood, Derrick had an extreme thirst
to learn and didnt give up until he mastered his goal. Upon graduating
BOCES (Board of Cooperative Educational Services), Derrick was determined to
get his GED, so that he could go onto college. He studied and took adult
classes for 6 years, so that he could pass his GED testing.
Derrick was
a dedicated body builder, who trained very hard working day after day until his
muscles would burn. Often riding his bike everywhere he needed to go. Although
Derrick had won many medals and trophies for weight lifting, in June of 1999
his efforts and hard work really paid off. He went to Raleigh Durham, North
Carolina where he competed against people from all over the world in the
Special Olympics World Games. It was on that day he became the WORLD CHAMP in
the power lifting event.
Derrick had many other qualities and gifts. He
was an avid fundraiser; there wasnt a cause out there that he wasnt
willing to support, often winning prizes for raising the most money. Some of
the agencies he advocated for were the Special Olympics, Epilepsy Foundation,
Breast Cancer Awareness and the American Heart Association, to name a few.
Whether he was raising money or attending supporting walks, he would always
take part.
Derrick was employed at the Monticello Fitness Factory for
10 years. There he was the head of maintenance, and often called the
third boss. Derrick was very proud of his job, for it gave him a
sense of independence. His bosses were an extended family and all the gym
members were his personal friends. Derricks greatest love was for his
family and for children. He was the best babysitter and role model to his small
cousins, nieces and nephews. No matter what the circumstances were you could
always depend on him to lend a helping hand. Whenever Derrick assisted you with
a project, it was no longer your project, but our project. He took
great pride and ownership in all that he did.
Derricks hobbies
included collecting movies, Janet Jackson Memorabilia, weight lifting,
wrestling, boxing, and helping his Uncle Robert do repairs around the house.
Derrick had a big heart and was a true champion by every sense of the
word. Hopefully, if you are a champion, you are a role model. This means being
unselfish and thinking of others. It means participating in community events.
Derrick understood that, he walked every year for many different causes,
including the Hudson Valley Fight against Breast Cancer. Prior to his passing,
he was preparing to donate some of his things to the tsunami victims. He
naturally was concerned about others and cared about all mankind. Derrick took
what was left after his life course was altered; he picked himself up, gathered
everything God gave him and made his life work. No one had to have faith in
Derrick, because he had faith in himself.
Do you know what its
like to know what your capabilities are? To have a dream or some sort of goal
you want to reach and people tell you that you cant do it. When you are
fighting to be the best and people are laughing at you or discouraging you and
putting you down. What separates the best from the rest is that champions
refuse to listen. They believe no pain; no gain and that they can win. Derrick
was a true champion.
On February 7, 2005 Derricks life came to a
sudden end, due to having a heart attack brought on by a seizure. Over the
course of his short life, he accomplished more than many without limitations.
It just goes to show that if you believe, you can achieve. Please
lets all remember that life holds no promises to any of us; at any given time
our lifes course can change or come to a sudden end. Please lets all be
kind to our fellow man. Often when people are not just like us, we dont
see them for who they really are. We are guilty of that in many areas of life.
When it comes to race, gender, and/or religion we are guilty of it; or when it
comes to people who have challenges that we dont have.
Often we
dont see problems until they directly impact our lives. Please lets
not stand in judgment of those who are different. Lets guide and assist
them when they are in need. One day we or one of our loved ones may be faced
with the same fate. |

First Time Buyers >Good Faith Estimates
Several years ago the U.S. Congress tried to protect consumers from a few unscrupulous lenders by requiring all lenders to calculate and disclose the annual percentage rate (APR) you pay on your mortgage loan. But most homebuyers will learn more by directing their attention to the Good Faith Estimate of Settlement Costs (GFE). Although Congress meant well, in practice the APR is not helpful and may be confusing.
If you are looking for a good way to understand your costs of borrowing and/or to compare one lender's costs to another, the GFE is your best bet. Get your lender(s) to provide a written GFE before you commit your mortgage business. When reviewing a GFE, keep in mind that the lender actually controls only a certain portion of the disclosed costs. Other parties typically control costs of appraisal, settlement, title insurance, recording fees and taxes, survey, and the "prepaid" expenses of homeowner's insurance, mortgage insurance, real estate taxes, etc. Review these origination fees, discount points, etc. and you will have the ability to understand the full costs of your proposed mortgage loan.
